What Are Number Memory Techniques?
Number memory techniques use mnemonic systems to transform abstract digits into vivid, memorable images or stories. The Major System, peg system, and word-length mnemonics (like the pi sentence) are the most popular methods. Memory champions use these to memorize hundreds or thousands of digits.
The Major System
Assign consonant sounds to digits: 0=S/Z, 1=T/D, 2=N, 3=M, 4=R, 5=L, 6=J/Sh/Ch, 7=K/G, 8=F/V, 9=P/B. Convert number strings into words by inserting vowels freely. For 3.1415: M-T-R-M-L → “motor mail” or “my turtle mole.” Vivid, bizarre images are remembered best.
The Peg System
Create a permanent mental “peg” for each digit 0-9 (1=candle, 2=swan, 3=heart, etc.). To memorize a number sequence, create an image combining each digit’s peg in order. For 42: swan (2) wearing a crown (4 reversed) — a vivid, unusual image sticks in memory.
Applications for Mental Arithmetic
Memory techniques support mental math by helping you store intermediate results, memorize formulas, and recall multiplication tables instantly. The same visualization skills used in memory sports directly improve mental calculation — both require holding and manipulating information in working memory. Practice 5 minutes daily with random number strings to build this capacity.

Practice Examples
Example 1: Memorize π to 10 digits: 3.1415926535
- Count letters in each word
- May(3) I(1) have(4) a(1) large(5) container(9) of(2) coffee(6)
- Optional: cream(5) sugar(5) for remaining digits
Answer: May I have a large container of coffee?

Answer: PEMDAS
Example 3: Memorize √2 = 1.41421356
- 1=L/D, 4=R, 1=L/D, 4=R, 2=N, 1=L/D, 3=M, 5=L
- Story: Lady Ran to Lady Running Near Lady's Mall
Answer: Use Major System
