What Is Vedic Mathematics?

Vedic mathematics is a system of mental calculation techniques derived from ancient Indian mathematical sutras (formulas). Popularized by Bharati Krishna Tirtha, these methods provide shortcuts for arithmetic, algebra, and beyond. The system emphasizes pattern recognition and works from left to right, making it naturally suited for mental computation.

Core Sutras for Mental Arithmetic

Nikhilam (All from 9 and last from 10): For numbers close to a base (100, 1000), subtract each number’s deficiency from the other number, then multiply the deficiencies together. For 98 × 97: (98 - 3) = 95, and 2 × 3 = 06, giving 9,506.

Ekadhikena Purvena (By one more than the previous): When two numbers share the same tens digit and their ones digits sum to 10, multiply the tens digit by (itself + 1) for the leading part, and multiply the ones digits for the trailing part.

  4. Multiply deficiencies: 2 × 3 = 6
